The experience

A siege that held. A minaret that stayed. A castle at the end.

Eger is a city shaped by a single moment — the 1552 siege, when a garrison of around two thousand held the castle against an Ottoman force many times larger. The castle is still there, the square still carries the name of the man who led the defence, and the minaret the Ottomans built a century later is still standing, the northernmost in Europe.

The walk begins at Dobó tér and moves through the inner city — the Archbishop’s Garden, the great cathedral, the Végvári Vitézek square, the minaret — and ends at the castle itself, with the Bükk hills behind and the town below.

Eger is a small city with an outsized story. The questions take their scale from the place.

How it works

You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops across the inner city. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. The castle is always visible from somewhere — it pulls you toward the end naturally.

After the walk

Szépasszony-völgy — the Valley of Beautiful Women — is a 10-minute walk from the castle. Wine cellars carved into the hillside, local Egri Bikavér. A natural place to continue the conversation.

These are some of what’s waiting across the island. The GPS cloud shows you where they are — the rest is up to you.

Dobó tér

The walk begins at Eger’s main square — named after István Dobó, the captain who held the castle against the Ottomans in 1552. The bronze statue stands at the centre. The castle is already visible on the hill above.

Végvári Vitézek Tere

The Square of the Border Fortress Warriors — a quieter space between the main square and the castle hill, lined with monuments to those who defended Eger. A question about courage: what you’d stand your ground for.

Főszékesegyház

Hungary’s second largest cathedral — a neoclassical basilica built in the 1830s on the site of an earlier church. The façade faces the main boulevard; the interior is vast and cool. A question about scale: when something is built bigger than it needs to be, and why.

Érsekert

The Archbishop’s Garden — a formal park behind the cathedral, open to the public. Chestnut trees, gravel paths, and a particular afternoon quiet. One of the calmest spots in the inner city.

Minaret

The northernmost minaret in Europe, built in the 17th century during Ottoman rule — still standing after the Turks left, too beautiful to demolish. A narrow spiral staircase leads to the top, with the whole city spread below. A question about what survives against expectations.

Egri Vár (Castle of Eger)

The walk ends at the castle — the site of the 1552 siege where a few thousand Hungarians held off a vastly larger Ottoman force. The walls, the bastions, the view over the town and the Bükk hills. Eger’s defining place, and a fitting end.

They held the castle. The minaret still stands.
Some things don't fall.

Eger is a city defined by defiance — the 1552 siege, the minaret that survived the reconquest, the Baroque inner city built over Ottoman foundations. It’s compact, walkable, warm, and surrounded by vineyards. The Along walk moves through all of it and ends where the story began — at the castle walls.
