The experience
A city rebuilt from nothing. More beautiful for it.
In March 1879, the Tisza river broke its banks and destroyed 95% of Szeged overnight. Within months, Franz Joseph promised the city would rise again more beautiful than before — and it did. The inner city you walk through today was built almost entirely in a single generation, on a grand ring-and-boulevard plan modelled on Paris.
The walk begins at Dóm tér — the great cathedral square — and moves through the Secession palaces, the boulevard, and the riverbank, ending in the Várkert on the site of the old medieval fortress. Twenty-five GPS stops scatter across the route.
Szeged is a city that knows what it means to start again. The questions take that seriously.

How it works

Dóm tér
The walk begins at one of Hungary’s grandest squares — the twin-towered Votive Church on one side, the Serbian Orthodox church on another, the old bishop’s palace closing the fourth. The whole history of Szeged in one enclosed space.
Fogadalmi Templom (Votive Church)
The neo-Romanesque cathedral built as a vow after the great flood of 1879 destroyed most of Szeged. It took fifty years to complete. The twin towers are visible from almost everywhere in the city. A question about what you build after something is lost.
Dömötör-torony
The Romanesque tower standing beside the Votive Church — one of the oldest surviving structures in Hungary, built in the 12th century. The new cathedral was built around it and beside it, not over it. A question about what you keep when you rebuild.
Fekete Ház
The Black House — a striking 19th-century merchant’s palace with dark stonework on the main boulevard. One of Szeged’s most distinctive buildings, and the one that looks most like it arrived from somewhere else. A question about standing out.
Reök-palota
A Hungarian Art Nouveau masterpiece from 1907 — organic curves, floral ornament, the building that makes people stop on the pavement. One of the finest Secession buildings in the country. A question about beauty: when it’s enough on its own.
Tisza-part
The river embankment — wide, open, unhurried. The Tisza moves slowly here, and the city faces it openly. Szeged was rebuilt after the flood on a grand Parisian ring-and-boulevard plan; the river is the reason for all of it.
Várkert
The walk ends in the castle garden — a quiet park on the banks of the Tisza, on the site of the medieval fortress that once defended the city. The river is close. The city is quieter here than anywhere else on the route.
