Sopron’s inner city is the best-preserved medieval town centre in Hungary — a horseshoe of narrow lanes, Gothic and Baroque townhouses, Roman fragments, and the Fire Tower that has watched over it all since the Middle Ages. In 1921, the residents of Sopron voted to remain part of Hungary rather than join Austria. The city is known as the most loyal town.
The walk begins at Fő tér and moves through the walled inner city — past the Fire Tower, the Fabricius house with its Roman cellar, the carved Gothic facades — ending at the Károly-kapu, where the old town gives way to the world outside.

Fő tér
The walk begins at Sopron’s horseshoe-shaped main square — one of the best-preserved medieval squares in Central Europe. Baroque facades, Gothic foundations, and the Fire Tower rising at the northern end. The whole city in one enclosed space.
Várostorony (Fire Tower)
The symbol of Sopron — a tower with Roman foundations, a medieval shaft, and a Renaissance balcony, all built on top of each other over centuries. The view from the top takes in the old town, the Lővér hills, and on clear days, the Austrian Alps. A question about what you see when you rise above.
Fabricius-ház
A Baroque townhouse built over Roman ruins — the cellar contains intact Roman floor mosaics and sculptures discovered when the foundations were excavated. Three floors of history stacked on top of each other, exactly as the city itself is. A question about what’s beneath the surface.
Bencés-ház (Bencicek-ház)
One of the most photographed buildings in Sopron’s inner city — a Gothic-Renaissance townhouse whose oriel window and carved stone details have survived intact. A question about small things: what you’d notice if you stopped and looked up.
Károly-kapu (Charles Gate)
The walk ends at the medieval gate at the southern edge of the old town — one of the surviving entrances to the walled city. Beyond the gate, the modern city. The old town closes behind you. A question about what it means to step through a threshold.
