The experience

Baroque squares. A bishop's castle. Three rivers at the end.

Győr has one of the best-preserved Baroque inner cities in Central Europe — not a single showpiece building but an entire neighbourhood of 17th and 18th century facades, churches, palaces and courtyards that survived the wars and the decades that followed largely intact.

The walk begins at Széchenyi tér and moves through the old town — past the Carmelite church, up to the Bishop’s Castle and Cathedral on Káptalandomb, through the Baroque lanes, and down to Dunakapu tér where the city originally faced three rivers at once.

Győr is often overlooked on the way to somewhere else. The Along walk is built for stopping.

How it works

You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops across the inner city. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. The Baroque streets invite wandering — the walk rewards it.

Three rivers

The Rába, the Rábca, and the Mosoni-Duna meet at the edge of the old town. The confluence is visible from Dunakapu tér — where the walk ends. A rare thing: a city that still faces its rivers.

What you'll find

25 stops.
Your order.

Baroque squares, a Carmelite church, a bishop’s hill, a thousand-year-old cathedral, and three rivers meeting at the end.

Széchenyi tér

The walk begins at Győr’s elegant Baroque main square — the Column of the Virgin at its centre, the Carmelite church on one side, the Ark of the Covenant monument on another. One of Hungary’s finest intact Baroque squares.

Karmelita Templom

The Carmelite church on Széchenyi tér, built in the early 18th century — a confident Baroque facade on a compact building that anchors the entire square. A question about what gives a place its character.

Püspökvár (Bishop's Castle)

The episcopal fortress on Káptalandomb — the hill that has been the religious centre of Győr since the first bishop arrived in the 11th century. The castle walls, the surviving medieval fragments, the view over the confluence of three rivers.

Székesegyház (Cathedral)

The cathedral beside the Bishop’s Castle — one of Hungary’s oldest, with foundations reaching back to the 11th century and a remarkable Weeping Madonna chapel inside. Győr’s spiritual anchor for a thousand years.

Dunakapu tér

The walk ends at the Danube Gate Square — where the city originally opened toward the river confluence. The Rába, the Rábca, and the Mosoni-Duna meet just beyond here. Three rivers, one square, a question about where things come together.

The Baroque city nobody talks about.
Three rivers waiting at the end.

Győr sits between Vienna and Budapest and is passed by both. Its inner city is among the most complete Baroque ensembles in Central Europe — churches, palaces, cobblestone lanes that survived intact. The questions settle naturally into streets like these. Unhurried, layered, going somewhere.
