The experience

A hill in a city. Tunnels, gardens, a clock that keeps going.

The Schlossberg is the rock at the heart of Graz — a forested hill rising 123 metres straight out of the old town. Napoleon ordered the fortress demolished in 1809. The townspeople paid a ransom to save the clock tower and the bell tower. Everything else came down. What remained became a park.

The walk begins at Hauptplatz and climbs through the hill’s layered history — the Kasematten tunnels, the Herberstein terraced garden, the bell tower — ending at the Uhrturm with the orange rooftops of Graz spread out below.

A city that fought to keep its clock tower deserves a walk that takes its time.

How it works

You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops across the hill. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. The Uhrturm is the natural end — but the hill rewards wandering.

Getting up

Three options: the Schlossbergbahn (funicular), the glass lift inside the hill, or the stairs. All three start near Schlossbergplatz. The stairs take about 15 minutes and are the best way to arrive.

What you'll find

25 stops.
Your order.

Tunnels carved into rock, gardens terraced into the hillside, two towers that survived an emperor’s orders — and a view that explains everything.

Hauptplatz

The walk begins at Graz’s great central square — the Rathaus on one side, the Mur on the other, the Schlossberg already rising above the rooftops. The city at its most itself.

Schlossbergplatz

The square at the foot of the hill where the city meets the rock. Stairs lead up in three directions. A question about what you choose when all paths are open.

Kasematten

The tunnels and vaulted chambers carved into the rock during the Napoleonic Wars. Cool in summer, dramatic year-round. Now used as an open-air stage. A question about what survives being repurposed.

Herberstein Garden

A terraced garden built into the hillside — roses, hedgerows, and a view over the old town’s orange rooftops. One of the quietest spots on the hill. A question about what you tend to.

Glockenturm

The Bell Tower, built in 1588, housing the largest bell ever cast in Styria. It rings three times a day. A question about what you mark — and what passes without notice.

Uhrturm

The Clock Tower — Graz’s most recognised landmark, with its famously oversized minute hand. It’s been keeping time on this hill since the 16th century. The walk ends here, with the whole city below and time doing what it always does.

They saved the clock tower.
Some things are worth the climb.

In 1809 Napoleon ordered the Schlossberg fortress demolished. The citizens of Graz raised a ransom to keep the Uhrturm standing. The rest of the fortress came down. The hill became a park, the towers became symbols, and the clock has been ticking ever since. The questions take their cue from the place — what do you fight to keep?
