Zadar’s old town is a narrow peninsula jutting into the Adriatic — walled, ancient, and compact enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes. But the walk isn’t about covering ground. It’s about what two thousand years of continuous habitation looks like when you slow down enough to notice it.
From the Venetian Land Gate to the Roman Forum, past the Cathedral and the Five Wells, through the lanes to the waterfront — and ending at the Sea Organ, where the Adriatic plays its own slow chord through pipes beneath the stone steps.
Alfred Hitchcock called the Zadar sunset the best in the world. Time the walk right and you’ll see why.

How it works

Best at sunset
The Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun are worth experiencing as the light drops. Start the walk 90 minutes before sunset and you'll arrive at the waterfront at exactly the right moment.

Kopnena Vrata (Land Gate)
The walk begins at the great Land Gate — a triumphal arch built by the Venetians in 1543, still the most impressive entrance to the old town. The winged lion of St. Mark above the arch. The peninsula begins here.
Five Wells Square (Trg Pet Bunara)
Five 16th-century wells in a row, built to supply the city during sieges. The water is long gone — the square is now one of the most pleasant in Dalmatia, shaded and unhurried. A question about what you store for harder times.
The Roman Forum
Two thousand years of Zadar on one square — Roman columns still standing, Byzantine church rising from ancient foundations, café tables where the temple once stood. The longest-inhabited place on any Along walk.
Cathedral of St. Anastasia
The largest Romanesque cathedral in Dalmatia, built over six centuries. The rose window, the striped stone facade, the cool interior. Zadar has been praying here since the 9th century. A question about what you keep returning to.
Greeting to the Sun
A 22-metre circle of solar panels set into the waterfront pavement — by day it charges, by night it glows in shifting colours. Nikola Bašić designed it as a companion to the Sea Organ. Stand on it and look up.
Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje)
The walk ends here — at the steps descending into the Adriatic, where air pushed by the waves plays through pipes beneath the stone. No two sounds the same. Alfred Hitchcock once called this the best sunset in the world. Sit down. Listen. Let the sea ask the last question.

Zadar has been continuously inhabited for over three thousand years. Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Austro-Hungarian Empire — all of them left something behind on this peninsula. The Along walk moves through all of it, and ends where the architecture stops and the Adriatic begins.
