The experience

A palace. A hill. Vienna at your feet.

Schönbrunn was the summer residence of the Habsburg emperors for nearly three centuries. The gardens stretch across 160 hectares behind the palace — formal parterres, hidden fountains, a tropical glasshouse, the world’s oldest zoo, and a hilltop colonnade with a view that explains why empires were built here.

The walk begins at the main gate and moves up through the gardens to the Gloriette. Twenty-five GPS stops scatter across the grounds — some in the formal garden, some along the wilder paths at the edges. You choose the route. The hill is always where you’re heading.

It’s the Along walk with the best ending. The view from the Gloriette earns every question that came before it.

How it works

You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops across the gardens. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. The Gloriette is the natural endpoint — but what you do between the gate and the hill is entirely yours.

Good to know

The gardens are free to enter. The Gloriette café terrace is a good place to finish. Wear comfortable shoes — the hill path is gentle but long.

What you'll find

25 stops.
Your order.

Fountains, glasshouses, the world’s oldest zoo — and a hilltop view that puts everything in perspective.

Schönbrunn Palace Main Gate

The walk begins at the ceremonial entrance — two stone pillars, the yellow façade beyond, and the Gloriette already visible on the hill. Everything that follows is uphill, literally and otherwise.

Palace Forecourt

The vast gravel courtyard in front of the palace. Maria Theresa’s architects designed it to make you feel small before you’ve even entered. It works. A question about grandeur — and what it costs.

Neptunbrunnen

The great Neptune Fountain at the base of the garden’s central axis. Eighteen metres wide, Neptune commanding the sea. The hill and the Gloriette rise directly above it. Stop here and look up.

Palmenhaus

The largest glasshouse in the world when it was built in 1882 — still one of the most beautiful. Tropical plants behind curved ironwork, in the middle of an Austrian imperial garden. A question about things that don’t belong where they are, and thrive anyway.

Tiergarten Schönbrunn

The world’s oldest continuously operating zoo, founded in 1752. The baroque octagonal pavilion at its centre was built for Emperor Franz I to take breakfast while watching the animals. A question about what we observe — and what observes us.

The Great Parterre

The formal garden stretching from the palace to the fountain — 23 parterres of clipped hedges, gravel paths, and symmetry. The kind of order that makes you aware of your own disorder. A question about control.

Gloriette

The walk ends at the hilltop colonnade built in 1775 as a monument to a military victory. From here, the whole of Vienna spreads out below — the palace, the gardens, the city, the horizon. A question earned by the climb.

Three centuries of empire. One afternoon.
One conversation that matters.

Schönbrunn has hosted more historic conversations than almost anywhere in Europe. Emperors negotiated here. Mozart performed here at six years old. Napoleon slept in the palace after defeating Austria. The gardens have seen everything. The questions are in good company.
