The experience
Parliament. Basilica. Then the river.
This walk runs through the monumental spine of Pest — from Jászai Mari Square in the north, past Liberty Square and the Olimpiai Park, through the shadow of St. Stephen’s Basilica, along the Parliament, and down to the riverbank.
Twenty-five GPS stops scatter across the route — you move freely between them, in your own order, at your own pace. The city is the backdrop. The questions are the conversation.
It ends on the Chain Bridge. By then, you’ll have said something you didn’t expect to.

Jászai Mari Square
Where the walk begins. A quiet square at the Pest end of Margaret Bridge — the city opens up in front of you from here.
Margaret Bridge
The bridge that connects the two banks and divides the island. Walk it, stop in the middle. The view north toward Margaret Island is one of Budapest’s quieter revelations.
Szabadság tér
Liberty Square — one of the grandest open spaces in Pest. American Embassy, the Federal Reserve building, Soviet memorial, all on the same square. A question about what we preserve.
Olimpiai Park
The strip of sports monuments along the riverbank. Where Olympic heritage meets the Danube. Quieter than the rest of the route — a good moment to slow down.
St. Stephen's Basilica
Budapest’s largest church and one of its two tallest buildings. The square in front of it fills up at night. The question unlocks here — with the dome above you and the city below.
The Parliament
Hungary’s most recognisable building, seen from the riverbank as it was meant to be seen — from across the water. 691 rooms, 40 kilometres of stairways, and a question about grandeur.
Danube Promenade (Rakpart)
The long riverbank promenade running south. The Parliament behind you, the bridges ahead. The pace slows here. So do the questions.
Chain Bridge (Lánchíd)
The walk ends where the city began — on the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest. Cross it or stand at its feet. Either way, it’s the right ending.
