The experience
A mosque in a church. Frescoes underground. Ruins with a view.
Pécs is Hungary’s most layered city. Romans called it Sopianae. Early Christians built burial chambers decorated with frescoes beneath it. The Ottomans built mosques on the main square. The Habsburgs built a cathedral on top of everything. Zsolnay made ceramic that outlasted all of them.
The walk begins at Széchenyi tér and moves north through the inner city — past the mosque-church, underground to the Cella Septichora, up to the cathedral and Barbakán, and out to the Tettyei ruins on the hillside above the town.
Pécs is a city that has always absorbed what came before it. The questions follow that instinct.

How it works
You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops across the inner city. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. No fixed path — just the old town and two thousand years of things worth stopping for.
UNESCO heritage
The Early Christian necropolis (Cella Septichora) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry requires a ticket — worth it. The walk routes past the entrance; going in is optional but recommended.

These are some of what’s waiting across the island. The GPS cloud shows you where they are — the rest is up to you.
Széchenyi tér
The walk begins at Pécs’s grand central square — the Gazi Kasim Pasha Mosque at its centre, the cathedral visible above the rooftops to the north. A square that has been Roman, Ottoman, and Hungarian — sometimes all at once.
Gazi Kasim Pasha Dzsámi
A 16th-century Ottoman mosque converted into a Catholic church after the Turks left — both a crescent and a cross still visible on the same building. One of the most quietly remarkable buildings in Central Europe. A question about what survives when the people who built something are gone.
Cella Septichora
A UNESCO World Heritage burial chamber from the 4th century, beneath the streets of the modern city. Early Christian frescoes, still intact underground. The oldest thing on any Along walk. A question about what you’d want to leave behind.
Pécs Cathedral (Székesegyház)
The four-towered basilica at the top of the old town — Hungary’s largest cathedral complex, built over Roman and early Christian foundations. The view from Dóm tér across the rooftops to the Mecsek hills is one of the best in the country.
Zsolnay-kút
The ornamental fountain decorated with Zsolnay pyrogranite — the luminous, frost-resistant ceramic that made Pécs famous across Europe. The peacock fountain on the main square is the most photographed thing in the city. A question about craft: what you make with your hands that outlasts you.
Barbakán
The medieval fortification tower at the northern edge of the old town — one of the best-preserved barbicans in Hungary. Thick walls, arrow slits, a view over the town below. A question about what you’d defend.
Tettyei Romkert
The walk ends at the ruins of a 16th-century bishop’s summer residence on the hillside above the town — an open park of broken arches and Mecsek views. The city spreads below, the hills continue above. A quiet, unhurried ending.

Every layer
is still here.
So are the questions underneath.
Pécs has been inhabited for over two thousand years — and almost nothing has been erased. Romans, early Christians, Ottomans, Habsburgs, Zsolnay: each left something behind, and it’s all still there. Walking through it makes you think about what persists — in a city, in a person, in a relationship.
