The experience

No traffic. No century. Just cobblestones.

The walk begins at the foot of the Budavári Sikló — the historic funicular that has been pulling people up to the castle hill since 1870. From there, 25 GPS stops scatter across the district: churches, palaces, hidden stairways, bastion towers, and the quiet western promenade that most visitors never find.

You choose your own path through the point cloud. The walk ends at the Esztergomi Rondella — a 16th-century bastion tower at the district’s southern edge, where the national flag flies above the city below.

The Castle District slows people down. The questions make use of that.

How it works

You receive a point cloud — 25 GPS stops on the map. Walk to any of them in any order. The question unlocks when you arrive. No fixed path, no instructions. Just the two of you and the castle hill.

What you'll find

25 stops.
Your order.

These are some of what’s waiting across the district. You choose where to go next — the questions wait until you arrive.

Budavári Sikló (Castle Funicular)

The walk begins at the bottom of the funicular — one of Budapest’s oldest mechanical landmarks, running since 1870. You can ride it up or climb the stairs. Either way, you arrive at the same place: above the city.

Royal Palace Terrace

The broad terrace of Buda Castle with the whole of Pest spread out below. The Danube, the bridges, the Parliament. The city never looks more like itself than from here.

Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom)

800 years of coronations, sieges, and Sunday mornings — still standing. The patterned roof tiles catch the light differently every hour. A question about what you want to last.

Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya)

Seven neo-Romanesque turrets overlooking the river. Built as a decorative rampart, it became one of the most photographed spots in Europe. A question about the gap between how something looks and what it is.

Tóth Árpád Promenade

The quiet western walkway along the castle wall. Chestnut trees, park benches, the Buda hills behind. Almost no tourists come here. One of the calmest stretches on any Along walk.

Hospital in the Rock (Sziklakórház)

A secret hospital carved into the hillside, used through every war since WWII. Hidden in plain sight beneath the castle. You can’t go in without a guide — but standing outside is a question in itself.

Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér)

The historic centre of the Castle District. The plague column stands in the middle — erected after the epidemic of 1710. A question about what we build to remember.

Országzászló — Esztergomi Rondella

The walk ends at the old bastion tower at the southern edge of the district. The national flag marks the spot. Below you, the city. Behind you, a thousand years of history.
